Dr. Dean Carlson is a comprehensive ophthalmologist with a special interest in modern cataract surgery and subspecialty training in the medical and surgical management of glaucoma. He has performed over 18,000 intraocular surgeries and laser procedures since 1990, including over 10,000 small incision, no shot, no stitch, no patch cataract surgeries. He added toric intraocular lenses for astigmatism correction in 2005 and Laser Cataract Surgery with the Catalys System in 2015. The Catalys System utilizes the precision of the laser to improve visual outcomes in patients with astigmatism. Dr. Carlson’s glaucoma subspecialty allows him to perform many different glaucoma laser procedures, including Selective Laser Trabeculoplasty (SLT, a cold laser) and Diode Laser Cyclophotocoagulation (Diode CPC). He also performs the traditional glaucoma incisional surgeries, trabeculectomy and tube-shunt implants, and the new bleb creating procedure called Xen Gel Stent implantation. Dr. Carlson also performs the new Micro Invasive Glaucoma Device Implantation (MIGS procedures) which include iStent Trabecular Micro Bypass surgery, GATT (Gonioscopy Assisted Tranluminal Trabeclotomy), KDB (Kahook Dual Blade), and CyPass Microstent.
Dr. Carlson has been married since 1982 and has three grown children and two grandsons. He is an avid golfer and skier and loves the outdoor activities Colorado has to offer. He is a volunteer school board member of Atlas Preparatory School, a charter school in District 2, that offers a rigorous academic program, character development and community involvement to its lower-income middle and high school students.
